Footscray Community Arts Centre is the place where important conversations happen .

"Footscray Community Arts Centre is the blueprint that all arts organisations should aspire to worldwide.  Groundbreaking, innovative, inspirational, encouraging and most importantly inclusive. Creativity is strong in your hands."
Charlie Dark, UK performance poet, musician and cultural activist (May 2010)

Established in 1974, Footscray Community Arts Centre is widely acknowledged as Australia’s leading centre for contemporary arts and community engagement. We are a unique place of learning and sharing where the dynamic between community, culture and contemporary art is explored and celebrated.

Our vision is for creativity and collaboration to be driving social, cultural and artistic vibrancy in Melbourne’s west.

Footscray Community Arts Centre collaborates with communities, artists and organisations to build capacity, create opportunities and drive social change.

We are the place where important conversations happen; we then action, cultivate and deepen.

We are both:

  1. A contemporary arts and community cultural development organisation working with local, regional and international communities
  2. A state-of-the-art cultural facility; producing and presenting culturally relevant programs and creative works with, for and by local, regional and international communities and artists

Our artistic and organisational goals are:
  • Innovation
  • Diversity
  • Leadership
  • Sustainability
  • Access

ABOUT THE IMAGE
Crowd Theory is an ongoing series of photographic performance events by artist Simon Terrill, that explores ideas of community and the nature of crowds. Each staging involves up to 400 people who are particular to the site of that production. The project began in 2004 in partnership with Footscray Community Arts Centre, when the then Footscray Community Arts Centre director Jerril Rechter and Simon Terrill came together to discuss ideas for a project involving people closely connected to Footscray Community Arts Centre. They wanted to create a work which was not only about the people associated with the Arts Centre, but which was also a spontaneous creation by the participants. More information about this work can be found at http://www.simonterrill.com/Crowd-Theory
